Around Ashbourne

Described as the "gateway to Dovedale", Ashbourne is surrounded by beautiful countryside and is an ideal base for a short break or longer holiday. There are miles of waymarked footpaths to explore and traffic-free cycle routes along former railway lines. Alton Towers, Britain's favourite theme park, is neaby too. Sudbury Hall

A beautiful 17th century house and gardens owned by the National Trust, built of red brick with fine carvings, plasterwork and paintings. Also the home of the Museum of Childhood.

Tissington Hall

A fine jacobean manor house in a picture-postcard village just north of Ashbourne. Home to the Fitzherbert family for over 500 years. Nearby is the old Coach House tearoom.

Carsington Water

Britain's newest reservoir is surrounded by numerous trails set amidst spectacular scenery. A watersports centre and other outdoor activities are available, plus a visitor centre, exhibition, restaurants and shops.

The Tissington Trail

Cycle hire is available at Mappleton Road (just outside Ashbourne) and Parsley Hay (off the A515 road to Buxton). The Tissington Trail links with the High Peak Trail just south of Parsley Hay.
