Ashbourne Royal Shrovetide Football is a game played every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. Unlike a conventional football match, this game is played over two eight hour periods with the goals three miles apart and very few rules!

It is thought that Shrovetide dates back many hundreds of years, although there is little documentation prior to the 1890′s due of a fire at the Royal Shrovetide Commitee office, however there are other publications mentioning the game in the 1600′s.
